Just one more reason to look forward to Thanksgiving.

The Muppets AND Jason Segal, such a wonderful world! I'm a little bummed that Amy Adams is one of the leads but, oh well, I guess you can't have it all. On the flip side there are lots of great people like Neil Patrick Harris and John Krasinski doing cameos!

Ramayana

Glenn Kotche (yeah, the drummer from Wilco) based this piece on the Indian narrative called Ramayana. It's percussive genius.

Prison

Two reasons to think about the criminal justice system:

First: the This American Life re-run of  Act V. If you haven't listened to the show, it's worth your time. Essentially the entire show is devoted to the St. Louis based Prison Performing Arts production of Hamlet. The show offers a really unique perspective on Hamlet from the view point of convicted criminals. As Jack Hitt puts it "It's a play about murder and its consequences, performed by murderers, living out the consequences."

Second: the movie Conviction.

Betty Ann Waters continues to put her education and experience to work by volunteering with The Innocence Project-an organization dedicated to "exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals through DNA testing and reforming the criminal justice system to prevent further injustice."

Bein Green

Guess who's doing a cover of "Bein' Green"? Yep, that's right, Andrew Bird!!

Actually there are a whole bunch of people doing Muppet covers for "The Green Album". Here's hoping they're all as good as Bird's.

In "It's a Wonderful Life" George offers to lasso the moon for Mary. Now, if he had been serious about it, he could have summitted the peak of a certain mountain and stood as close to the moon as possible without actually leaving the earth.

Ok, so, the earth isn’t a perfect sphere-nothing unexpected there. My favorite science guy,Robert Krulwich, compares its actual shape to a slightly deflated beach ball that someone’s sat on and left an indentation-an “oblate spheroid” as mathematicians would call it. There's a bluge making some places on earth closer to things in outer space than others.


It’s common knowledge that at 29,035 above sea level, Mount Everest is the highest point on earth-IF “highest” is defined starting at sea level. When thinking of the highest point as the point farthest from the center of the earth, Mount Everest isn’t the winner. Neither is K2, or Mount McKinley.

Grab your gear and a Spanish dictionary kids, we’re going to Ecuador. Yep, Mount Chimborazo in the Andes Mountains is the farthest point from the center of the earth, and thus-the closest point to the moon and outer space, which is where George should have gone. According to Joseph Senne, an engineer/surveyor, Chimorazo sits 1.5 miles higher on the bulge than Everest.

So, you go out to your back yard and you start digging-straight down. You dig and dig and dig all the while thinking "I can't wait to hang out with Jackie Chan, we'll grab some dim sum and then maybe we'll take a jog on the Great Wall." Then suddenly, you break through the earths crust and you're drowning. "This isn't China", you think to yourself. Nope, you're in the Indian Ocean. If you had taken a look at the map of antipodes Ze Frank created, you'd have known that if you live pretty much anywhere in any of the 48 contiguous states you should have considered investing in some diving gear before you started digging. Well now you know.
